Building The Sustainable Future and the Architects Doing It

Rhode Island College hosted a capacity crowd and a live global viewing audience for the special, “Building The Sustainable Future and the Architects Doing It.” The event, on campus had people driving in from as far as New York, and the audience watching online was truly a global community with views from Asia, Europe and the Americas.

The event was produced to recognize innovative sustainable designs in three specific categories, the architects behind them, the evolution of these works, what we are learning from them, and how they can be applied today and into the future. The three specific categories that were represented in the production were: commercial, that was lead by architect Joe Haskett of Union Studio, residential, that was lead by Megan Moynihan of OYSTER WORKS, and leisure/modular, that was lead by Igor Zacek of Nice Architects.
The event also was also an opportunity to recognize each the architects with the 2016 ReNewable Now Green Architect Innovation Award. The award honors those in the field of architecture who have demonstrated originality while addressing the concerns of the environment and overall sustainability, while showing leadership and the willingness to share their knowledge with the community. Presenting the awards were Rhode Island College President, Nancy Carriulo, and Rhode Island College Sustainability Coordinator, Jim Murphy.

On hand for the presentation representing the Slovakian Embassy out of Washington, D.C. was Peter Petian Head of Commercial & Economic Development who spoke about his country’s pride in Igor Zacek receiving the 2016 ReNewable Now Green Architect Innovation Award for his firm Nice Architect’s work with the ECOCAPSULE. Pertain had this to say, “Igor has shown that anything is possible, he is a good example for others around the world to be creative and to start new businesses. We value our relationship with the United States our ability to innovate and learn but I want to see more great innovation from my country and from the heart of Europe that succeed globally.”
