Interesting look at high-end sustainability

In recognition of the opening week of NFL football, and in hopes that people of all income (the more you have, the more efficient you can possibly be--at least compared to other folks in the neighborhood), we present a recent story (part of the article and a link to see the whole thing, including some pictures of a beautiful house) from Ecorazzi:

Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchenopened the doors of their newly completed 14,000 square foot mansion to Architectural Digest. The home, which took five years and $20 million to complete, while large, is a great example of how a person can make any home eco-friendly.
The magazine’s editor-in-chief, Margaret Russell, told the Today show, “Tom Brady literally opened the door to me and took me through the house and I found out how committed they are to an Eco-conscious lifestyle. It made the story even more special.”
Bündchen told Architectural Digest about making their home green, “From the beginning we asked everyone involved in the design and construction, ‘How can we make it as sustainable as possible?’”
The couple says that 90% of the materials used inside the home are either recycled or antique. Three-quarters of the project’s construction debris was also recycled.

Giselle also had solar panels installed on the roof of the home. The couple even has their own chicken coop out back, so they can have fresh eggs daily.
There is one part of the house that doesn’t necessarily adhere to the green theme – Gisele’s massive walk-in closet, where her designer shoe and more than a few purses collection are on display....'

China’s rich, yearning to breathe free, migrate to U.S.

Thanks to the Providence Journal for a great article highlighting a steady exodus of Chinese entrepreneurs fleeing an increasingly dirty homeland.

We've been reporting on this now for awhile.  Here is a great example, a painful lesson, in witnessing the potential demise of a country's economy, and the loss of great wealth, after seeing that country sacrifice a liveable, breathable environment for unbridled financial growth.

That same tipping point, which is hard to get back once you destroy natural resources, is unsettling many other countries.  Countries that need to learn from China's disaster.  The world, our planet, can ill afford more China's.  

In the meantime, as this article points out, those countries who have imposed environmental standards, who have tried to balance jobs with a long-term quality of life for its citizens, will clearly benefit as they welcome wealthy immigrants to their shores.  Immigrants who come not just with money, but education, job skills, entrepreneurial success and, most likely, families ready to spend money on education and training.  They will also spend plenty of money on real estate, cultural integration and consumer goods.  All positive shots/stimulus for the economy.

Thousands of Chinese are fleeing to the United States. We are not talking about impoverished peasants hiding in cargo containers. We’re talking about millionaires flying first class and buying condos in the choicest ZIP codes. A big reason for this relocation, real estate agents say, is a desire for America’s clean air, as opposed to China’s suffocating smog.
Welcome to the new world of environmental immigration. These are not the “huddled masses” immortalized on the Statue of Liberty’s poem, but they are — quite literally — “yearning to breathe free.”
One can see the point of leaving China if you have the resources. Rust-colored toxic wastes choke its rivers. Sooty air makes eyes itch. And public-health crises in some industrial towns have reached the level that they’re being called “cancer villages.” Who wants to expose the family to that if you can live under Boston’s blue skies and in close proximity to the select U.S. universities you want your kids to attend anyway?
About a quarter of recent buyers for Boston’s top luxury condos have been foreign investors, especially from China and other parts of Asia. A local entrepreneur, Patty Chen, runs a soup-to-nuts relocation service, American Asia Business Tour Group-Boston, helping out with immigration visas, real-estate services, and advice on schools and neighborhoods.
Manhattan has experienced a similar rush of Chinese buyers. Michael Chen at the brokerage firm Bond New York cites their preference for New York’s fresh air and “better family and work/life balance.” Guess it’s all relative.
How bad is the pollution back in China? A recent study published by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences found that Chinese living in their country’s heavily industrial north die on average five years earlier than those living in the south. Reliance on coal-fired heating and factories is largely to blame.
China has been the world’s third-most popular tourist destination, after France and the United States. But the number of visitors there fell 5 percent this year. The China National Tourism Administration cites the smog as a big factor keeping people away. Beijing saw a steeper, 15 percent drop in foreign travelers. More and more businesspeople are reportedly trying to get moved out of Beijing for health reasons.
For decades, corrupt Communist Party leaders have squandered their natural heritage in their push to create jobs — and stay in power. The policy has also enriched their families and cronies feasting off the big, dirty industrial machine. But now environmental squalor is beginning to be bad for business — as well as stirring social unrest, which is about time.
The government has started sponsoring studies on ways to lessen pollution, both the noxious type you breathe and the invisible planet-warming gases from the same sources. Proposals include a carbon tax on fossil fuels and a national carbon-credit market. Sound familiar?
Environmental segregation is not unknown in the United States. Affluent precincts in this country maintain pristine surroundings, while poorer ones often get the smokestacks, waste facilities and lax regulations.
But Americans never let things reach the point that their rich citizens immigrated in massive numbers to cleaner countries. And to their credit, Americans have accepted the loss of some competitive advantage in global manufacturing as a necessary price to pay for protecting our natural surroundings.
The alarm is sounding for China’s elite to also address the trade-off between explosive economic growth and environmental degradation. Jobs versus early death should be a topic for national debate.
You wonder whether China’s environment would have been allowed to get so putrid if rich Chinese had to gasp the same air as the toilers. One can’t blame them for wanting to escape, but still you wonder.

Nike’s New Shanghai Store is Made From 100 Percent Trash

Imagine a Nike store built 100 percent from trash.

It would be designed to be very flexible. The suspension ceiling system would be designed to adapt to different exhibition and retail programs. Almost everything would be adjustable, which would free the floor plan for future installation and lighting conditions. No glue would be used to ensure that all materials can be 100 percent re-recycled. Now place the store in Shanghai, China where Miniwiz 
Sustainable Development Ltd., a Taiwanese architectural firm, completed just such a Nike concept store in July.
The building's connection joints are made from 5,278 aluminum cans, and the 2,000 yards of tension cables are made from 2,000 post consumer recycled water bottles. The building is constructed from Miniwiz's RiceFOLD ceiling panels, which were made from 50,000 recycled CDs and DVDs. The panels are reinforced with Rice Husk Si02, which is a natural, organic mechanical strengthening additive. They are designed with engineered light and sound diffusing properties which amplifies sound distribution without being muddled. The light is evenly distributed with little back lighting, which will eventually reduce operational cost and the building's carbon footprint. They are very fire resistant and can be used as wall or ceiling panels for residential and commercial buildings. The origami design of the panels allows the panels to be shipped stacked and flat. They contain low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and their weight is less than half of the weight of an aluminum panel.
Miniwiz also designed a building called the EcoARK Pavilion in Taipei, Taiwan which served as the main building for the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition. It is the first public building made of Miniwiz's Polli-Brick which is composed of 100 percent recycled polyethylene terephthalate polymer. Made from 1.5 million recycled plastic bottles, the nine-story building features natural ventilation, an exterior waterfall from water collected from rain, and solar power captured during the day runs LED lighting systems at night.
Miniwiz's other designs clearly set the bar high for green building. The firm designed a building for the 2011 Taipei Pavilion World Design Expo in Taipei, Taiwan made 100 percent from Polli-Bricks. The building was created without using any adhesive so that the entire building can be disassembled for reuse. The same year, the firm designed the Pacific Department Store in Chengdu, China. The 37-story building is made from Polli-Bricks. A year later, the Eco House was built for Earth Day 2012 in Taipei Main Station in Taipei, Taiwan with 4,000 Polli-Bricks. It is the first building to feature Rice-Fold panels.

Sustainable education, we feel should start at a young age and be ingrained into people in order that it becomes a way of life for them. This would also prepare them to make the work force better and more productive.

President Obama is expected to make a decision regarding his support or rejection of the pipeline project by the end of this year. In recent months, rhetoric coming from the White House has shown recognition that the XL Pipeline will not add jobs in the long term and may have a significant impact on continued expansion of global CO2 emissions. Most important is President Obama's open recognition that something has to be done about climate changenow.

This is a change from the "like-it-or-not" feeling environmental groups have had over the last couple years and has both proponents and opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline planning rallies, tailgate parties, and plenty of protests to pull our pragmatic president to one side of the fence or the other. 

Central Utah's Pando, world's largest living thing, is threatened, scientists say




LOGAN — Utah scientists are trying to organize an emergency rescue effort to save the largest living thing ever discovered, anywhere on Earth. It's known as Pando, a single organism living in central Utah, that some scientists say could also be the world's oldest living thing.
But Pando is dying and may have only a few more years of glory.
It's a grove of quaking aspen trees spanning 106 acres near Fish Lake. Scientists call it an aspen clone, which is essentially a single plant comprised of thousands of trees connected by underground roots. When Pando was discovered a few decades ago, scientists named it with a Latin word that means "I spread."
An aspen clone starts with a single seed and spreads by sending out underground sprouts that emerge to become trees. In the 1970s, scientists tentatively mapped Pando's boundaries. More recently, Utah State University geneticist Karen Mock wondered if Pando's reputation as the world's largest known organism was overblown.
"So we set out to either confirm or deny that," she said.
Mock took DNA samples from 209 trees, mostly within that boundary. Her testing verified what was long suspected. "Genetically, in fact, Pando is one enormous clone over 100 acres," Mock said, "probably over 40,000 individual trees."
In all, Pando weighs about 13 million pounds, which makes it by far the most massive organism ever found.
"There may well be some larger clones than Pando out there," Mock said. "But it's the largest organism that's been described" by scientists..."
