Update in RI

We hope this passes in RI and starts to take shape nationally.  We just came through the Christmas season and are still swimming in packaging.  Getting reductions, and holding manufacturers responsible for taking back their packaging, would help reduce lots of waste, and would ultimately benefit the consumer, reduce shipping costs and save natural resources.:

RI lawmakers continue study of ways to limit packaging waste

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island officials are continuing a study of ways to increase the recycling of packaging materials like plastic bags.
A special Senate commission studying the topic is set to meet Wednesday at the Statehouse.
The group is tasked with recommending ways to encourage manufacturers to reduce, reuse or recycle packaging material with the aim of minimizing how much of it ends up in the state's main landfill.
Wednesday's meeting will feature presentations from representatives of the packaging, grocery and waste industries.
The panel is led by Sen. William Walaska, a Warwick Democrat. It is expected to submit its recommendations to the Senate by March.
