Wow, does this headline get your attention? Can we afford to put 2 billion more refugees on the street? Of course not.
Look at the masses of land wiped out. Look at the reshaping of existing water fronts of cities and communities. Our world, at least temporarily, would be paralyzed.
These are frightening but realistic scenarios. Some aspects we can control--abating pollution levels in our system, retreating from over development, better zoning and perimeter management around coastal areas, expert resilience training and planning, etc. Of course anything we do to protect natural capital will help.
Other elements, including Mother Nature's reaction to the growing population and stress on her systems, are way outside of our abilities. There we must simply ride the tide of the damage done.
